One of my employees decided to take it upon themselves to "decorate" the lobby of the Starlight. Fake snow from a can on the windows, garland, lights. A little mini Christmas tree on the desk and some red and green M & Ms in a bowl that's shaped like a reindeer. I didn't ask them to, but I guess I can admit that I like the way it looks.
I think my daughter is behind it. Ally decided to buy little stockings and hang them up. There's one for me, one for her, and one for Ronnie, Leah, and Sadie. It's funny, really. She helped decorate the lobby the same way she'd decorate a house. I'm just waiting for her to ask me to put fake reindeer on the roof. | | Saturday, October 1st, 2011 | | 9:05 am |
A hidden talent I have? I am a master of breakfast foods. Ally had her friend, Eva, over for a sleepover last night, and this morning, I whipped up some chocolate chip pancakes. And we're not talking just your simple Bisquick-with-chips variety. I made the batter from scratch, added the chocolate chips, made some whipped cream (that's right, I made it), and sprinkled some dry hot cocoa mix on top. Gourmet breakfast. The girls didn't even know what hit them.
Hey, I'm the father of a teenage daughter. I've got to take any and all opportunities I can to impress her, before she figures out that I'm not cool anymore. | | Monday, May 30th, 2011 | | 5:50 pm |
Weddings and Memorial Day festivities always seem to liven up this sleepy little town. Even my motel was fully booked, which is pretty good for business, but it keeps me hopping. I'll admit it, I kind of enjoy it when things are busy like this. Being busy means I don't get much time to sit down, but it makes the hours go faster and makes me actually feel like I'm accomplishing things. I hate sitting around and twiddling my thumbs. I'm a man of action.
Unfortunately, being so busy means that I don't have a ton of time to devote to Allie. She's been so swamped with projects and papers that she hasn't had much time to go out and do things, either. We went out to dinner once this weekend, and we've been meaning to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but it just wasn't in the cards this weekend. Probably not next weekend, either, since my sister will be in town.
Things are just going to keep getting busier. | | Sunday, January 9th, 2011 | | 6:00 pm |
Do you ever get the feeling like there's no news fit to read? Forget all those 24/7 television news networks that give you more coverage than you always knew you never needed, but I'm talking about the classic ink and newsprint newspaper. It's always filled with garbage, depressing stories about the depravity of human beings. Shootings, kidnappings, abuse and neglect, petty theft. But the happy stories don't sell papers. The stories that expose the distortion and upset of the status quo -- that's what sells.
Thank god that's not my problem anymore.
It's nice having Alison back after spending Christmas at her mom's, but she's back to school now. I'm glad to have things settling back into the old routine. I'm going to sit outside and see if I can catch Mr. Robertson's spirit hanging around. Things have been especially chilly outside his room in the last couple of weeks. |
